The Legacy of Gauntlet: Dark Legacy

Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is an installment in the Gauntlet series, and to us, we think it's a great game. Why? Well, what do you think John Tvs' Blog of Wonders is for?

This game in particular, is one of the only Gauntlet games we've played. The other game we've played is the original Gauntlet, and well, while that isn't an inherently bad game, does lack many qualities that the later games would have.

So, what is the game about? Simply put, Sumner is a wizard who protected the eight realms, but his brother Garm became jealous, causing him to summon Skorne, a demon whose minions are now running rampant. It is up to you to play as one of the eight heroes to defeat him and the rest of the minions.

Well, that sounds like an odd story, and it is like most fantasy tales. But this game has something special that the other Gauntlet games just don't have, that being the wide selection of characters.

There are eight main characters in the game: Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, Archer, Dwarf, Knight, Sorceress, and Jester.

There are also eight different unlockable characters, each of which are beast versions of the eight main characters. These include: Minotaur, Falconess, Jackal, Tigress, Ogre, Unicorn, Medusa, and Hyena.

There are also other secret characters too! These include many different generals, which can be unlocked as follows:

Battle GeneralBAT900
Castle GeneralCAS400
Desert GeneralDES700
Mountain GeneralMTN200
Ice GeneralICE600
Sky GeneralSKY100
Town GeneralTWN300

It's not just these generals that are unlockable. There are also many others that can be unlocked too!

Enough of the characters, how's the gameplay? Well, it's pretty good! It remains true to the Gauntlet series' style, and has many of the same features, like the ability to auto-attack your enemies, and to use keys and many, many other items.

Each character has their own special abilities and unique stats. Even the beast characters are overall better versions of their human counterparts due to having better stats.

Another cool thing about the game is the power-ups. You can turn into a chicken, kill Death, or even shoot 3-way shots! How cool is that?

Not to mention, you can do awesome combo moves by auto-attacking while holding the Square button!

But, this game is like everything else man-made; it isn't perfect. For starters, if you change your character, you have to start over. For instance, you'd think that if you were an ace at the Jester, then moving on to the Warrior would keep all of your progress. However, this isn't the case. If you choose a new character, you have to play a new game with that character, that is, unless you are playing multiplayer.

Don't get me wrong, multiplayer is great, because if you play in multiplayer, you can help the other player(s) get some vital collectibles for beating the game. But it does have some flaws.

If a player is at a high rank, and you're not, well, I hope you like to play somebody else's data, because if not, that's what you're gonna do anyways.

Lastly, the cutscenes aren't that good. Need I say more?

But, regardless, we has humans have to learn to accept imperfections in man-made creation. Only naturally made things are... okay, back to the point.

So, is this game good? In our opinion, absolutely! If you like co-op games, fantasy games, or just fun games in general, give this game a shot!

This game has helped the Gauntlet series become more vast, and it has also helped more people recognize the series, too. Thanks to this game, Gauntlet is now a game series that has truly found a legacy.

Oh, and if you're wondering who our favorite characters in the game are, they would be the Red Warrior, the Blue Jester, the Blue Minotaur, the Blue Falconess, the Yellow Knight, and the Green Jackal.
